What to expect on a Back 2 The Motherland Experience

Taking a trip to the continent can be exciting and life-changing. Through our Back 2 The Motherland program, participants dive into the rich culture and traditions of West African cultures. Here are some of the things to components of the experience:

Giving

Investment into Africa is a huge part of the Back2Motherland trips. These experiences provide a wide variety of resources from educational materials, toys to children, construction materials, and more!

The Back2Motherland experience will include opportunities to visit rural areas and provide gifts to children.

“Whenever I visit villages in rural areas of Ghana, I see children who play soccer with rocks instead of soccer balls,” says Marcella Hicks. “I see little girls who have dolls, play with dolls that don't look like them. I see parents who barely have school fees for their children. It really doesn't take much to put a smile on a child's face.”

Stops along the Back2Motherland trip will include deliveries of wifi-enabled devices, equipped with a year of broadband service, to students enrolled in our virtual exchange program in Ghana. Devices are available to purchase for distribution via Connected To Culture, Inc.’s AmazonSmile Charity List.

The organization not only builds virtual connections but also supports the in-person connections that educators provide students each day in the classroom. Proceeds from the trip will go to providing construction materials to schools building projects. The Back2Motherland experience will include visits to current building  projects.

Nature

See Ghana’s amazing beaches, parks and natural attractions on the Back2Motherland trips.

With over 350 miles of coastline from Aflao in the Volta Region all the way to Cape Three Points in the Western Region, beautiful beaches are plentiful in Ghana. The Back2Motherland experience will make rest and relaxation stops on the sands of Labadi Beach, Ada Beach, Elmina Beaches and more.

Ghana is blessed with rich, world-class nature parks that are second to none in terms of size, beauty, and diversity. Their uniqueness, variety of landscapes, natural features, outdoor activities, and picturesque backgrounds will leave you speechless. Whether you are searching for the tallest mountains, magical waterfalls, thick forests or stunning coastal sceneries, lush nature, wilderness feels, and active adventures are awaiting.

Cuisine

Ghana’s food is as diverse as its people, with every ethnic group having a special dish of their own. From the coastal towns to the savannah regions, one can count about a thousand and one different foods littered across the tropical country. However, some foods are known for their delectability and are common with almost all Ghanaians.

Shopping

West African fashion is known for its use of vibrant colors and prints. This fashion hub is bursting with local artisans and designers, all of whom specialize in reinventing traditional kente and ankara prints with a modern twist.

 Landmarks

Thanks to Ghana's rich environmental and cultural heritage, there are plenty of landmarks worth a visit. These range from waterfalls and lakes to mansions and memorials, offering something of interest to most visitors.

There are also some very important castles and fortresses within Ghana. The most noteworthy of these landmarks include the Elmina Castle, Fort Prinsensten and the Osu Castle (Fort Christiansborg), the latter of which resides in Accra, along with the much-photographed Independence Arch and the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park.

Nightlife

The legendary Ghanaian rhythm comes to life in most cities and major towns after working hours where you can #feelghana. The Ghanaian warmth and culture extend to our buzzing bars and pubs, nightclubs and drinking spots where African rhythm is usually alive. Experience the real #feelghana moments by visiting any of the numerous locations where you enjoy live-band music of #highlife, #hiplife or even take dance lessons in highlife, salsa, Kpanlogo or Boborbo where you could dance the night away as you enjoy drinks with friends or while making new friends.
