Grooves For Growth

A dynamic and multifaceted program designed to empower community youth by blending dance, music, and cultural exploration. Through hands-on training and mentorship, youth participants have the opportunity to engage in both dance and DJing, learning essential life skills while fostering creativity, leadership, and cultural appreciation. The culmination of Grooves for Growth is the annual, highly anticipated Grooves in the Garden celebration.

Global DJ Skills and Music Therapy Experience

Through hands-on training, students will learn the technical aspects of DJing and music production. They will explore various global music genres, with a particular emphasis on African and African Diaspora musical traditions. In addition to mastering DJ equipment, students will gain exposure to the cultural contexts behind different music styles, fostering a deeper connection with the global music community.

Digital Literacy and Career Exposure

Students will strengthen their intermediate computer skills while learning essential tools like file management, digital presentation software, and basic coding concepts. Throughout the program, they’ll build confidence in navigating technology with hands-on guidance. They will also be introduced to exciting career pathways in creative technology and digital media.

Dance and Cultural Empowerment Experience

Participants will receive hands-on instruction in various dance styles, including African dance, Afrobeat, hip-hop, and contemporary movement. Students will learn the foundational techniques, choreography, and performance preparation skills needed to express themselves through dance.

Final Showcase at Grooves in the Garden

The program culminates in Grooves in the Garden, a vibrant celebration where students will perform dance routines and debut original music and digital projects for friends, families, and the community.

CALLING FUTURE DJs IN DC!

Grooves for Growth is offering a FREE 5-week summer program designed to uplift and empower youth ages 10–17 from Moten Elementary School in Ward 8. Through a creative blend of DJing, music production, dance, digital literacy, and audio therapy, students will explore new talents, build confidence, and discover future pathways in technology and the arts.

Program Dates: June 30 – August 1, 2025
Schedule: Monday–Friday | 11 am to 4 pm
Location: Moten Elementary School (Ward 8, Washington, DC)
