Evening Tea Series Launch: Rest and Relaxation

A Celebration of Wellness and Storytelling

Be part of a groundbreaking wellness experience that will be archived in the DC Public Library’s Special Collections. Must be 21 years or older to participate.

Join us for the debut of the Evening Tea series—an intimate gathering of Black women changemakers, storytellers, and wellness advocates in Washington, DC. This exclusive event, hosted by Akua Tay and Tsion Tekle, invites you to participate in meaningful wellness practices, witness authentic storytelling and contribute to thought-provoking conversations designed to inspire connection, healing, and empowerment.

Run of Show:

  • 6:00 PM – Introduction and Backstory of the Event (10 minutes)
    Learn about the vision behind the Evening Tea series, the importance of celebrating Black women’s wellness narratives, and the inspiration driving this groundbreaking oral history project.

  • 6:10 PM – Sound Bath & Gentle Yoga (20 minutes)
    Immerse yourself in a calming sound bath and gentle yoga session to set the tone for the evening, inviting relaxation and mindfulness.

  • 6:30 PM – “Sparks & Stretch” Self-Cannabis Massage and Stretching Class (30 minutes)
    Led by Nikki Nicole, this engaging session teaches self-massage techniques and partner-assisted stretches using cannabis.

    • The “Spark” Component: Participants may optionally consume an edible or pre-roll before or during the session (if facility permitting). If on-site consumption is not allowed, Nikki will guide participants on incorporating cannabis into these techniques for at-home use.

    • Techniques covered include active and passive stretching to foster relaxation and physical well-being.

  • 7:00 PM – “Wellness & Homeopathy: Exploring Cannabis and Microdosing” (30 minutes)
    A presentation by a qualified cannabis specialist covering:

    • The benefits of cannabis for managing stress, anxiety, and overall well-being.

    • Homeopathic approaches to wellness.

    • The science and potential benefits of microdosing cannabis.
      Note: This segment emphasizes responsible and informed use of cannabis, prioritizing individual health needs.

  • 7:30 PM – “High Tea” Featuring Akua Tay and Tsion Tekle (15 minutes)
    Hear Akua and Tsion share their powerful wellness journeys, blending cultural heritage, personal struggles, and community-building. Their stories will inspire you to reflect on your own pathways to well-being.

  • 7:45 PM – Open Call for Future Guests (15 minutes) Learn how you can share your story/wellness journey and be featured in future tapings of the Evening Tea series. This is your opportunity to contribute to a growing archive of Black women’s wellness experiences.

  • 8:00 PM – Closing Remarks & Gift Bag Distribution (20 minutes)
    The evening concludes with gratitude-filled closing remarks and light refreshments. Each guest will receive a curated wellness gift bag designed to encourage self-care, mindfulness, and holistic well-being.

About Akua Tay and Tsion Tekle:

  • Akua Tay: A digital content creator, urban gardening advocate, and founder of Connected to Culture, Akua’s wellness journey was catalyzed by co-parenting struggles while raising a young Black man and launching a nonprofit organziation. These experiences inspired her to explore wellness as a tool for resilience and community healing, connecting others to nature and cultural heritage through storytelling and gardening.

  • Tsion Tekle: Executive Director of KidOvation Stage and a passionate wellness educator, Tsion integrates social-emotional learning and creative expression into her work with children and educators. Her personal journey highlights the power of creativity and connection in building resilience and promoting well-being.
